Disbudding and Other Painful Procedures

Picture

Common procedures performed in cattle are known to be painful and should be performed in ways that minimize stress and pain. Giving pain relief or eliminating the need for the procedure are ways to do this.

How to assess:

Review the painful procedures protocol to confirm that the following information is included and that appropriate criteria are being met:
  1. Method: Paste or cautery can be used. It is recommended that paste not be used after 3 days of age to minimize the risk of paste rubbing off the intended area. Scoops, bands, clove oil, or any other methods are not acceptable.
  2. Age completed: Must be completed before 8 weeks of age
  3. Analgesia: Must be provided regardless of age
  4. Anesthesia: Must be provided regardless of age

This protocol must have been reviewed and signed by the VOR within the last 12 months.

Evidence that this protocol is being followed on the farm will be checked during the audit by interviewing an employee who performs these procedures and by visual confirmation that farm practices are consistent with the SOP.
