All calves, heifers, and hospital cows should have housing that provides access to a soft resting area that minimizes injury. This excludes bare rocks, wire, metal, concrete, bare mattresses, and water beds.
National Dairy FARM Program
All age groups of cattle should have a resting area that is cushioned and provides insulation, warmth, dryness, and traction at all times when away from the milking facility.
- Calf pens and housing must be dry, clean, and well-ventilated
- Stalls must be maintained daily and bedded such that leg lesions are minimized
